Tips on Hot Weather Tiling and Grouting from Laticrete

Hot Weather Tiling and Grouting
TDS 176

Conventional portland cement tile-setting beds, thin-set mortars, cement plasters and stuccos are often permanently damaged when subject to hot, dry temperatures or desert climates immediately after installation. High temperatures remove the water content of the mortar required for portland cement hydration, curing and strength development. In addition, rapid drying often causes mortar to crack, crumble or lose bond. Waterproofing membranes, anti-fracture membranes, epoxy adhesives, epoxy grouts, epoxy waterproofing membranes and most other products will also be affected by hot working temperatures. Flash setting and reduced working time can result. It is important to note that surface temperature is more important than air temperature. Therefore, monitor the surface temperature of the installation.

There is a simple rule to follow when an installation is subjected to high temperatures: The 18º Rule – for every 18ºF above 70ºF (10ºC above 21ºC), portland cement and epoxy based materials take half as long to cure.

The use of premium latex-fortified mortars (e.g. LATICRETE® 254 Platinum or LATICRETE 317 gauged with LATICRETE 4237 Latex Additive) allows installations to be made at higher temperatures due to the fact that they have longer working properties. LATICRETE 3701 Mortar Admix in thin-sets, plasters, stuccos and other portland cement mortars allow work to continue in hot weather without costly delays or damage. Installations can be made in temperatures as high as 90°F (32°C) under normal circumstances.

LATICRETE Latex Fortified Mortars are NOT damaged by high temperatures and thermal shock after placement and eliminate the need for wet curing. Rapid setting materials will provide for greater challenges when working in high temperatures and should be used with caution.

General tips for working in hot temperatures:
  1. For best results, always ship and store installation materials at 40º - 90ºF (5º - 32ºC) to extend the shelf life and working time. Do not store products in direct sunlight. If installation materials are too warm, they should be cooled to the specified temperature range for that specific product.
  2. Dampen or wet down substrate surfaces to not only clean the area, but to lower the temperature and lower the absorption rate of the substrate. Sweep off excess water just before mortar is applied. This step will extend the working time of the installation materials.
  3. Stir latex additives thoroughly before mixing with thin-sets, grouts, plasters, stuccos and other portland cement mortars.
  4. Due to the rapid rate of moisture loss and portland cement dehydration at temperatures >90°F (>32°C), cover installations with polyethylene sheeting for 1-2 days to allow curing at a more normal rate.
  5. Low humidity also accelerates the curing process.
  6. Tent off or provide shade when working in direct sunlight
  7. Work during cooler periods of the day (e.g. early morning)
Tips for grouting in hot temperatures:
  1. Store grouting materials at 40º - 90ºF (5º - 32ºC) to extend the shelf life, pot life and working time. Do not store products in direct sunlight. If installation materials are too warm, they should be cooled to the specified temperature range for that specific product 24 hours prior to the start of grouting.
  2. Dampen or wet down substrate surfaces to not only clean the area, but to lower the temperature and lower the absorption rate of the substrate.
  3. Always clean the mixing pail before mixing a fresh batch of grout. Left over grout in the pail (on bottom and sides) can accelarate the setting of freshly mixed grout.
  4. Mix cement grouts with clean cool water. This step will extend the pot life and open time of cement grouts. Hot Weather Tiling and Grouting TDS 176
  5. Remix cement grouts after ~15 to 20 minutes (after initial mixing, 5 minutes of slaking / remix and use) to an even consistency to prolong pot life.
  6. Tent off areas of work to provide shade when working in direct sunlight.
  7. Work during cooler periods of the day (e.g. early morning).

Shaw Industries Cradle to Cradle Carpet Efforts - Video & Info

Shaw Industries, the leader in carpet recycling, manufactures carpet that is completely recyclable into new carpet via its Evergreen facility. Products from Shaw Contract Group constructed with Eco Solution Q contain recycled content from Evergreen.

Post-Consumer Carpet Recycling and Collection

Labels found on Shaw's carpet styles made from Anso® Nylon 6 feature information regarding the post consumer recycled content, as well as the recyclability, of these products. Recycling of carpets made from Anso Nylon 6, as well as other carpets made from the same type of nylon, is made possible by Evergreen Nylon Recycling, Shaw's Nylon 6 recycling operation in Augusta, Georgia. The Evergreen facility converts post-consumer Nylon 6 carpet back toits original starting material, caprolactam—the building block for Nylon6 fiber. The caprolactam from Evergreen is mixed with new caprolactam during the manufacturing process, and new Anso nylon fiber is made.Although Anso Nylon 6 carpets contain nylon produced with Evergreen post consumer caprolactam, the actual percent of recycled content in the product will vary from sample to sample.

Evergreen Nylon Recycling, Shaw's nylon recycling operation in Augusta, Georgia, employs patented technology that converts post-consumer nylon carpet and recycles it back to its original material - the building block for nylon fiber. As a result of this technology, carpets of Nylon 6 are capable of being recycled into new carpet repeatedly without the loss of any aesthetic or performance properties.

Partnering with a number of recycling companies, Shaw has established a collection network to bring post-consumer carpets to Evergreen for recycling. Currently, the collection system is operational in a number of locations throughout the country, and Shaw is adding areas to their network continuously. Although the recycling efforts may be limited at this time, the recycled content Shaw is able put into their products from this process represents a nationwide environmental benefit.

This map indicates the locations where Shaw's collection efforts are now operating, and the map will be updated on a regular basis as new collection sites are established. Call 1-800-434-9887 for more information.

Info on LATICRETE Masonry Veneer Installation System (MVIS)

The LATICRETE Masonry Veneer Installation System (MVIS)

The increase in popularity of adhered manufactured stone masonry veneer facades has left the industry absent of suitable installation materials and detailed specifications - LATICRETE  has the answer!
LATICRETE's proven technology will provide a permanent, high strength installation that is freeze thaw stable and protects from water intrusion.

For over 53 years LATICRETE has continuously provided the latest technology in construction materials and methods to deliver superior problem free installations for tile and stone installations. Utilizing these advanced technologies, the LATICRETE Masonry Veneer Installation System (MVIS) is designed to offer complete solutions for adhered manufactured stone masonry veneers.

Installation of manufactured stone masonry veneer is typically performed with on-site mortar mixes that are subject to large variations in quality and performance. Whether over concrete or masonry substrates, installations usually include metal lath and most often provide inadequate protection from the weather resulting in water intrusion and also delamination of the veneer. Difficult to use and very time consuming to prepare, these systems are not engineered as complete wall systems and therefore do not offer warranties from a reliable source that will stand behind the installation.

MVIS System Cutaway Drawing

The LATICRETE® MVIS provides the solution to common manufactured stone veneer installation challenges by offering a comprehensive quality controlled installation system. Utilizing proven materials, LATICRETE MVIS products include a revolutionary weatherproofing membrane, polymer fortified adhesive mortars that provide non-sag performance, a scratch and brown coat mortar, a masonry pointing mortar and a 100% silicone sealant.

This informational video will demonstrate the advantages of installing masonry veneers using the LATICRETE® MVIS.

LATICRETE has developed an enhanced system of Adhered Veneer Installation products to improve upon the traditional methods of installation that have demonstrated the tendency to fail through delamination and premature corrosion of the structural reinforcing.

The LATICRETE system is similar to the traditional method with the difference that instead of utilizing standard masonry cement mortars as in the past, polymer fortified adhesive mortar is used. LATICRETE Masonry Veneer Mortar has been specifically designed to provide high bond strength, flexibility and durability. It is used employing the same installation methods the installers have become accustomed to.

A further improvement is the inclusion of LATICRETE Hydro Ban™, a liquid applied breathable waterproof membrane that prevents moisture intrusion in barrier wall constructs. This membrane is located outside of the corrodible structural components of the wall offering maximum protection and longevity to the entire assembly.

In addition, the LATICRETE system allows for another option that increases quality and durability. Instead of a field formed lath and plaster substrate, which is subject to great variability in workmanship (and therefore quality), cement backer board is used. This substrate is typically used with tile and natural stone installations and is "time and field proven" to provide great consistency and durability in installations. By replacing the lath and plaster coat, this option also decreases the cost of the system at the same time as increasing performance levels.

LATAPOXY® Waterproof Flashing Mortar and LATICRETE Latasil™ silicone sealant allow for a complete installation that is protected by the LATICRETE System Warranty*.

LATICRETE offers a comprehensive 25 year, 100% labor and materials system warranty* for masonry veneer installations over concrete and masonry substrates (for both interior and exterior applications) and a 15 year, 100% labor and materials
system warranty** for steel or wood framed exterior facades. LATICRETE Warranties Cover Any Suitable Tile or Stone Manufacturer’s
Product, Allowing You to Select the Appropriate Product and Finish You Desire for Your Project Customizable Warranties Are Available to Suit Your Specific Project Requirements.

What is the difference between 100 and 1000 Series Wicanders Cork?

1000 Series has a HPS (High Performance Surface) Wear Layer

HPS - is based on nano technology, where extremely tiny beads are embedded in the top layer. When compared with the standard finish this gives the whole HPS surface improved properties such as scratch, slip, scuff, and stain resistance.

100 Series has an Xtreme WRT Wear Layer

- Four times more wear-resistance than usual varnishes of comparable quality.

- Clearly increases slide resistance. Even in socks you will not slide. The tiny ceramic micro beads slightly roughen the surface of the varnish and reduce sliding potential.

-Considerably improves UV protection, protecting the cork flooring from the sun`s rays that cause it to change colour over the years.

-Enhances the natural features of wood and cork. This varnish ensures that the velvety warmth of cork and wood is preserved.

-Fully dirt-resistant. Everyday shoe debris, colour spots and any other type of dirt can easily be removed from an Xtreme WRT varnish, even if the floor has a high level of traffic.

- Matte varnish emphasizes the natural structure of cork and wood while guaranteeing high quality.

Erinn Valencich's Floor Choice for Vintage Chic Living Room

Article Found On: Splurge Steal: Vintage Chic Living Room - An innovative new series from eHow at Home

"Erinn Valencich is an interior designer and lifestyle expert. She has hosted several one-hour specials for HGTV including Decked for the Holidays, Fantasy Wedding in a Week and Light It Up! She has made numerous appearances on The View, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and Fine Living's Mail Order Makeover." --eHow at Home

"Since this country home had been remodeled many times, and none of them good attempts, the structure had many different characteristics working against each other. One of the main updates this room needed was the addition of a new floor. The old floor had been covered with tile and was, sorry to say, ugly. While replacing a floor may sound expensive and quite messy, it can be quite the opposite experience when working with the correct material for the project. I chose to use a high quality laminate from Quick-Step's Veresque collection. It gives the most realistic hardwood floor look. I like this product for quick remodels because it can be installed easily over an existing floor and is very well-priced. The updated floor gave the room an entirely new look and a clean slate with which to design our furniture layout." --Erinn Valencich on eHow at Home

Need to Replace a Konecto Plank? No problem...Here Is How.

Replacement of Konecto Plank :
Be sure to keep some spare Konecto planks in case there is an unforeseen need for replacement. If you
need to replace a plank of Konecto use a heat gun and heat up the outside of the damaged plank, along
the “under lip” Konecto Strip on the long and butt end of the plank. You can determine the “under lip”
Konecto Strip by finding the installation starting wall. It is on the right side and top of the plank when facing
plank and starting wall is on your left from the second row on. Hold the head gun at least 6” away and
be careful not to burn surface of plank. This will soften the adhesive enough for you to then make an
incision with your utility knife along the seam cutting through the whole plank. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A
VERY SHARP BLADE IN YOUR UTILITY KNIFE!!
(See Figure 6)

Figure 6

Cut a slot around 6 inches from the long side you just cut. Then using a flat head screw driver or putty knife,
pry up the damaged plank use the heat gun to help release the plank. Once you can grip the plank pull it
away from the “under lip” Konecto Strip from the adjoining plank be careful not to rip or damage strip.
(See Figure 7 and 8)

Figure 7

Figure 8

If strip is damaged then please replace using alternate method below.
On “Over lip” Konecto Strip on adjoining plank use heat gun to soften adhesive and peel back original
“Underlip” Konecto Strip on side and butt end of plank (See Figure 9)

Figure 9

If possible fold a piece of wax paper enclosed in Konecto cartons and wrap around each edge. Lift
adjoining planks and slide replacement plank into place. The wax paper will help keep the plank from
sticking to adjoining plank when sliding in plank. Remove the wax paper. Use a hand roller on all four
seams of plank.

Alternate Method:
Use a heat gun being careful not to burn plank surface. This will soften the adhesive enough for you to then
make an incision with your utility knife along the seam cutting through both the “over lip” and “under lip”
Konecto Strip. Do this on all four sides. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A VERY SHARP BLADE IN YOUR UTILITY
KNIFE!!
Cut a slot in the center of the plank to be removed. Then using a flat head screw driver or putty
knives, pry up the damaged plank. If the edges of plank that is removed do not cut out cleanly, you may
need to go back with your SHARP utility knife and with a straight edge “clean up” the edges so that
perfect rectangle is left with no Konecto Strips remaining from the adjoining planks—just a perfect
rectangle remains (See Figure 10)

Figure 10

When installing the replacement plank, first cut off the “under lip” Konecto Strip from one side and simply
“attach it” to the “over lip” on the opposite side. Do this for both the long and short sides.
Take double face tape and cut four pieces to be place all around the plank leaving the bottom cover on tape
lift adjoining planks and side tape into position leaving at least 1 inch of tape exposed all around plank
(See Figure 11)

Figure 11

Position replacement Planks and press into place. By not gluing the tape to the floor you will keep
the installation floating so no buckling can occur.

WITH EVER INCREASING ENERGY COSTS, INCORPORATING LATICRETE FLOOR HEAT INTO YOUR NEW HOME OR REMODELING PROJECT CAN HELP YOU SAVE BIG WELL INTO THE FUTURE.

By Lance Charnock, Account Manager Flooring Distributors of America

Radiant floor heat
is not a new concept.  It has been used for centuries in one form or another. The Romans used to channel hot air under their floors, and the Koreans used hot flue gasses under their floors before venting through a chimney. The technology however, has changed. Modern forms of Radiant Floor Heat are made possible through electricity. Electric Radiant Floor Heat systems allow equal distribution throughout the entire floor, not just localized areas where a register or fireplace may be present.  This allows the room to heat from the bottom up, warming the feet and body first. The room’s air temperature may only be 65 degrees, but since the entire surface of the floor radiates about the same amount of heat as the human body it feels much warmer.

Laticrete captures the latest technology with their patented Floor Heat Systems. With heat mats for virtually every room layout, there isn’t a floor Laticrete can’t heat. Imagine the cost savings in being able to shut off the vents in unoccupied rooms of your house, simply because you have Laticrete Floor Heat. Less furnace means less gas, which means less bill.  It’s that simple. With easy to read digital thermostats and power source options of 120VAC or 240VAC, no job is too big or too small.  Kits are available in more popular room sizes offering even more savings.

The subfloor in which the Laticrete Floor Heat System is installed over can impact energy savings as well. The most energy cost savings are usually seen when installed over concrete. This provides a significant thermal mass. Once this thermal mass is up to temperature it could keep a home comfortable for 8 to 10 hours with no further heat input. I would recommend a thermal barrier for applications over plywood on or above grade. Laticrete 170 Isolation Mat can be used as a great thermal barrier for plywood subfloor applications. This forces the warmth up, rather than being drawn down and away from the intended area to be heated. The electrical use of the Laticrete Floor Heat System per room is comparable to a small lamp in your living room. If installed in a basement the effects would be felt throughout the entire house. Laticrete Floor Heat installed throughout the entire basement of a home would dramatically change the use of the homes furnace. This results in real savings for the homeowner.

*Always check with manufacturer to determine if your flooring material is suitable for in-floor heating.

For this, and other energy saving and green products visit us at www.floorlife.com. To layout your customized Laticrete Floor Heat system, use the room tool floor layout available on www.laticrete.com.

Thinking about Doing It Yourself? -Things to Consider before Installing your Floor.

The DIY approach can be an easy way to cut some corners in order to save money when installing floor in your home, however before you take that approach there are some things you should consider first.
  1. Flooring projects can be labor intensive.
  2. Materials can be heavy and awkward to carry.
  3. Certain floors can also require special tools; which you may need to buy or rent.
Still thinking about installing your next floor yourself? Then you should ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do you have the time to complete the project?
    -  Size of Room, Type of Room, Prep Before Installing and Type of Flooring can all play factors in your project time.
    -  Also if demolition is a factor in your project, then that can add to your project time as well as removal of existing materials.

2. Do you or someone you know have the skills necessary to complete the project?
    -  The basic skills are easy to obtain, if you are good at reading/following instructions & willing to learn.
    -  It helps to be handy with tools and staying organized is a plus.
    -  Consider your flooring choice. Some companies make DIY friendly products for example: Mannington Caspian LOCnGO Hardwood, Quick-Step Uniclic Laminate, Konecto Lock-Connect Technology Vinyl, and Avaire Floating Porcelain Tile.

Things to be aware of when installing Konecto over certain existing floors

Installing Konecto Over Existing Resilient Floors:

Resilient Tile & Sheet Vinyl Floors:
The floor must be in good condition and thoroughly bonded to the structural floor... The exception is that any tile or sheet that is of a soft cushion construction must be removed. Note: A layer of resilient or soft underlayments like lauan may compromise the inherent strength of Konecto. Do not insall over more than one layer of existing flooring, to prevent indentation or possible stress on the adhesive seams.

Ceramic Tile:
If laying Konecto over existing ceramic tile, it may be necessary to skim coat the grout lines with a floor leveler. If you install Konecto over an existing floor that has an embossing or grout line on  it, Konecto / Metroflor recommends that you skim coat with a floor leveler if the embossing or grout line is greater than 1/8" (3 mm).

Asbestos Tile:
If you have asbestos tile and don't want to pay for an expensive asbestos abatement job. Konecto is the perfect answer. Any loose or damaged tiles should be patched prior to installing Konecto over the asbestos floor. Never sand asbestos floors from any floor manufacturer, if you think the floor may have asbestos.

Concrete Subfloors:
Check for any dips in the subfloor that can create a void underneath the floor that will cause stress on the plank seams when walking on it. If so fill in and level subfloor with embossing leveler. Konecto is waterproof so it can be installed directly over concrete floors in the basement. If your concrete floor has any bumps or burrs of concrete sticking up, simply knock them off with a hammer and chisel, then fill in the hole with a leveler.

Questions or want to place a Konecto order please call 1-877-357-9663 or visit www.flooringmarket.com.

A Closer Look at Cork

About cork

Cork is the outer bark of the cork oak tree, Quercus Suber, which grows mainly in the Mediterranean region. The bark is a vegetal tissue composed of an agglomeration of cells filled with a gaseous mixture similar to air and lined with alternating layers of cellulose and suberin. Corks elasticity, combined with its near-impermeability, makes it the perfect material for making bottle stoppers, floor tiles, insulation sheets, bulletin boards and other similar products. Because of its remarkable qualities, cork is used in high-tech applications including car engines, dam mechanisms and airport runways. The aeronautics has used cork as a thermal insulator in space shuttles.

  about cork2

The use of cork as a raw material dates back to Phoenician and Greek times. Cork began to become known all over the world as an effective bottle stopper for wine. In fact, cork is the only material that makes a perfect seal during the aging of the wine.

Today, cork is a valuable resource for Portugal, representing one of its most important export products.

The cork oak

Cork oak forests cover approximately 2.5 million hectares across the Mediterranean region and most of them are located in seven countries: Portugal, Algeria, Spain, Morocco, France, Italy and Tunisia.

A typical tree produces several hundred kilograms of cork at each harvesting and will survive for many generations. The bark is stripped off the tree in sections by highly skilled men using special axes, a traditional manual skill that dates back many hundreds of years.

about cork

Cork is harvested on a sustainable basis and the stripping of the bark does not harm the tree in any way. The bark grows back completely, taking on a smoother texture after each harvest. The tree has a lifespan of 250-350 years and a cork oak tree can be safely harvested up to 20 times during its life cycle, making cork a truly inexhaustible natural resource.

New plantations of cork oak trees are planted each year to ensure the level of cork production is maintained. Cork oak trees cannot be felled or removed without government authorization, which is rarely granted.
Portugal, which produces more than 50% of the world’s cork, has been particularly careful to safeguard this valuable resource. The first Portuguese laws protecting cork oak trees date back to the 14th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became illegal to cut down cork oak trees, except for essential thinning or the removal of old, non-productive trees.

In a context of increasing concern for the environment, cork remains the only tree whose bark can regenerate itself after each harvest - leaving the tree unharmed. It is truly a renewable, environment.

A natural “green” product

In these times of increased concern for the environment, cork remains the only tree which can regenerate itself after each harvest. The cork bark is stripped off two-thirds of the tree. The first harvest of cork is not stripped until the tree is approximately 20 years old. A thin layer of protective inner bark gives the cork oak its unique ability to survive and regenerate itself after the debarking process. Stripping the bark requires great skill, as the inner bark must not be damaged. A specially designed hatchet is used for the stripping process.

The first bark taken from a tree is called virgin bark. It has a very irregular exterior surface and is grayish in color. This bark is suitable for grinding into various minute sizes ideal for cork insulation and composition cork. Interestingly, it has also become a very popular material for the manufacture of decorative items.

After the first harvest of cork, the bark is stripped from the tree once every nine years, until the cork oak is about 150 years old. The tree is then replaced by a much younger one. The bark which grows after the virgin bark has been stripped is called refugo bark. It looks entirely different, having a much smoother surface, which is brown in color. The first crop of refugo is used mostly for grinding. Subsequent strippings yield better quality cork that has fewer and more tightly closed pores (grains). Most of the cork from these subsequent harvests is used for the production of cork stoppers or other items requiring cork with a finer appearance.

After being stripped, the bark is left in the forest for some days to dry and, possibly, to be inspected by potential buyers. Purchasing cork bark is not an easy task as the quality not only varies from forest to forest, but also from tree to tree. Even the same tree may produce cork of varying degrees of quality depending on its exposure to sunlight.

Once in the factory area, the refugo bark is boiled to make it easier to remove the woody outer layer and to make the bark more elastic so that it can be flattened out more easily. The bark is then sorted into various thicknesses which are, in turn, sorted into different qualities. These different qualities determine the sale price and/or the suitability of the cork for different manufacturing uses.

Cork is a natural product with remarkable and unique qualities that are unmatched by any other natural material. One cubic inch of cork is composed of no less than 200 million tightly enclosed air cells, each measuring l/1000" in diameter. Each minute cell is 14-sided, which virtually eliminates any empty space between the cells.
This quality is what gives cork its remarkable elasticity and ability to regain its original shape after being compressed.

Cork properties

The bark of the cork oak tree has a unique honeycomb structure composed of tiny cells. Each cell has the form of a 14-sided polyhedron and the inner cell space is entirely filled with an air-like gaseous mixture. The properties of cork derive naturally from the structure and chemical composition of its extremely strong, flexible cell membranes, which are waterproof and airtight.
Because about 89% of the tissue of the bark consists of gaseous matter, the density of cork is extremely low, in the order of 0.12 to 0.20, a fact that bears witness to the huge disproportion between the volume and the weight of the material.

The unique and valuable properties of cork include:

Lightness Lightness:
Cork is light and floats on water. For many thousands of years, this has been its most evident and most celebrated characteristic. Since ancient times, cork has been used in fishing equipment.
Elasticity Elasticity and Resiliency:
The cell membranes of cork are highly flexible, making it both compressible and elastic. This means it returns to its original shape after being subjected to pressure. This and other characteristics explain why cork has become an indispensable material for making bottle stoppers.
These physical qualities mean that cork can be fitted perfectly against the walls of the bottleneck. When cork is subjected to strong pressure, the gas in the cells is compressed and considerably reduced in volume. When the pressure is released, the cork immediately recovers its original shape and volume, showing no trace of having been subjected to any appreciable deformation.
Impermeability Impermeability:
The presence of suberin (a complex mixture of fatty acids and heavy organic alcohol) renders cork impermeable to both liquids and gases. As a result, it does not rot, making it one of the best seals available.
Insulation and fire retardant qualities Insulation and fire retardant qualities:
The value of cork is further enhanced by its low conductivity of heat, sound and vibration. This is because the gaseous elements it contains are sealed in tiny, impermeable compartments, insulated from each other by a moisture-resistant material. This endows cork with one of the best insulating capacities, both thermal and acoustic, of any natural substance.
Cork is also a natural fire retardant: it neither spreads flames nor releases toxic gases during combustion.
Resistance Resistance to wear:
Cork is remarkably resistant to wear and has a high friction coefficient. Thanks to its honeycomb structure, it is less affected by impact or friction than other hard surfaces.
Hypoallergenic properties

Hypoallergenic properties:
Because cork does not absorb dust, it helps protect against allergies and does not pose a risk to asthma sufferers. It also has an unchangeable constitution that guarantees efficiency.

Konecto Exotics Receives ADEX Platinum Award

Konecto Exotic Planks Received the 2010 ADEX Platinum Award

About ADEX

ADEX stands for Awards for Design Excellence and is the largest and most prestigious awards program for product design of furniture, fixtures and finishes marketed to the design trade. Design Journal, the international trade publication for interior designers, architects and facility managers is the proud sponsor of the ADEX Awards.

Design Journal as a way of recognizing superior product design introduced the Awards for Design Excellence (ADEX) in 1994. Response from manufacturers was immediate as over 100 companies participated in the inaugural event. The 2010-11 ADEX Awards will attract upwards of 500 companies submitting approximately two thousand of innovative new products.

An anonymous panel of professionals representing a cross section of the design industry conducts all voting for the ADEX Awards. ADEX judges are among the ablest in their respective areas of expertise and so the ADEX Award represents the best product designs of the year in the opinion of those who themselves reside at the top of their specialty. Specifiers who specialize in office design judge the contract entries, lighting specialists judge lighting, flooring specifiers judge flooring and so on.

Each category has potential for three award levels of platinum, gold or silver. Judges award points in several categories for each entry. Total points earned determine each product’s score. Minimum scores are needed to qualify for awards. Winners are published each April in Design Journal. In their first year, the ADEX Awards were presented in a modest four-page section in Design Journal. The 2010-11 ADEX Awards will take up the entire ADEX issue.

Protecting Your New Vinyl Flooring is Key

Protecting Your New Vinyl Flooring is Key

To keep your Konecto vinyl flooring looking new for many years to come, protecting it is vital.  Although Konecto flooring is durable, all floor coverings require some care to look their best and many problems can be prevented before they occur. The type and frequency of traffic on your floor will determine the frequency of maintenance needed. The type of Konecto and even the color will also have some bearing on how much care may be necessary. For example, solid color floors will visually show scuffs, scratches, dirt, and general wear to a greater degree than multi-colored Konecto. White or light colors will visually show staining to a greater degree than darker colors. For this reason, solid colored and white Konecto floors should receive special attention in regard to preventative maintenance and amount of care provided. Good judgment when choosing the type and style of Konecto will help prevent maintenance problems before the floor is even installed.  At FlooringMarket we pride ourselves in having the most knowledgeable staff. Feel free to visit www.flooringmarket.com or call1-877-357-9663 to speak to one of our sales representatives.  If you have any questions please let us know.  Here are some of the proper steps for maintaining your Konecto floor

 1.  In order to prevent indentations and scratches, provide glass, plastic or other non-staining cups with flat under surfaces not less than 2" in width or the legs of heavy furniture or appliances.  Equip swiveled-type office chairs and other rolling furniture with broad surface non-staining casters at least 2" in diameter.  Remove small diameter buttons from the legs of straight chairs and replace with metal glides that have bearing surfaces not less than 1".

  2. Protect your Konecto against burns.  Burns from the glowing end of a cigarette, matches, or other extremely hot items can damage Konecto floors.

  3.  Do not flood floor or subject to frequent standing water. Konecto will not be affected by the moisture but other problems associated with excessive moisture can affect the job site and should be addressed.  Konecto plank should not be used as a Moisture Reduction System.

  4.  Protect your floor from tracked-in-dirt and grit particles by using mats at all outside entrances.  Take time to remove any imbedded grit particles from shoe soles before entering the room.  Avoid the use of rubber-backed mats, as certain rubber compounds can permanently stain vinyl.  Avoid tracking in tar or asphalt from driveways, as this can also discolor vinyl. Avoid high heels on your Konecto, they can cause permanent damage. Do not use vinegar, one step-cleaner/polishes or oil soaps on Konecto products.

 5.  Spills should be cleaned up in a timely manner, Konecto has a high resistance to stains, the longer the spilled materials remain on the floor the greater the risk of staining.

  6.  Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for prolonged periods. During peak sunlight hours, the use of drapes or blinds is recommended. Prolonged direct sunlight may cause slight fading or discoloration of your Konecto floor.

Konecto is a durable, long-lasting floor, but just as any other flooring it must be maintained and protected. Protecting your Konecto from heavy furniture, dirt and other debris, and direct sunlight are some of the ways you can keep your Konecto looking new for years to come. If you have any questions at all please visit www.flooringmarket.com or call Flooring Market Inc. at 1-877-357-9663.

The story of Amorim Cork is one of silent strength and natural wonder. It begins every quiet morning nestled within the Mediterranean, long rays of sunlight splintering through leaves of the Montados, the Cork Oak forests. Harvesters set for work in the pristine Montados of the Mediterranean, as they have done for generations.

As tradition, they will tend to the daily needs of each individual evergreen Cork Oak , nurturing them from seed. This includes tilling the earth on the forest floor, watering, and careful pruning so that its boughs may grow wide and strong. Come mid-May, the season of harvest will again begin

Every nine years, mature evergreen Cork Oaks are carefully shorn of their collected bark by hand. Each majestic tree remains absolutely unharmed, as the outer bark soon regenerates and the Cork Oak continues to flourish. Being a sustainable crop, Cork Oak trees provide an average of 16 bountiful harvests over an impressive 150-200 year lifespan. After each season bears blankets of raw harvest, they are then gently aged and purified. These harvested sheaths are so very light, remarkably warm, and resilien.

Home Construction & Improvement Review on SnapStone Products

The Article listed below is from Home Construction & Improvement

SnapStoneFloating Porcelain Tile System

SnapStone Floating Porcelain Tile System

For many DIY’ers and home improvement fanatics the thought of installing ceramic tile can be quite daunting and ultimately a reason for another flooring selection. Those second thoughts are no longer justified with the option of installing SnapStone yourself.

Recently the folks from SnapStone sent us some samples of their product to evaluate. SnapStone is to tile floors what laminate flooring is to the wood flooring industry with one difference. With SnapStone you don’t have to settle on the surface. The surface of SnapStone is porcelain tile just like tile you’d install with thinset.

Installing SnapStone Tile System

SnapStone Tile System SnapStone Making Tile Easier

SnapStone installs quickly and easily over most any hard, flat surface, including existing vinyl, concrete and hardwood floors. Its patented interlocking plastic tray backing provides a non-skid, sound-dampening grid that eliminates the need for messy thinset.

Each piece snaps together in perfect alignment, taking the time and guesswork out of installation, allowing do-it-yourself homeowners to achieve professional results in a fraction of the time and at less total cost than traditional methods.

The tiles do snap together fairly easy. However, it does take some practice to get used to tiles that snap into two other pieces. Once you’ve got a rhythm down these tiles install in less than 25% of the time it would take to install a tile with thin set.

Definitely A DIY Product

Over the years I’ve installed my fair share of ceramic tile on concrete and plywood floors. This product is sure to eliminate some of the fears that average DIY’ers have about mixing thin set and working quickly. With SnapStone   you can take your time and fit the pieces together like a large puzzle. If you’re looking for an alternative to traditional tile then this is the product for you.

Mannington Recognized by Department of Energy

This article was published on FloorTalk.com/Flooring News: Friday, April 09, 2010

Mannington Recognized by Department of Energy

Friday, April 09, 2010

Salem,NJ, April 9, 2010--The U.S. Department of Energy has recognized Mannington Mills as one of fewer than fifty Save Energy Now Leader companies in the country.

With an ambitious goal to improve energy efficiency by 25% over the next ten years, Mannington is progressing with ongoing, rigorous energy management efforts to increase the energy efficiency of all of its operations, and so also reduce related carbon emissions.

"By taking this pledge to reduce your industrial energy intensity by 25 percent over ten years, Mannington Mills has established itself among the vanguard of forward-thinking American companies as a leader in industrial energy efficiency," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu in a letter to Mannington executives. "Your commitment provides an inspiring example of how the country can tackle some of its most challenging energy and environmental issues, while continuing to boost our economic competitiveness."

The industrial sector plays a major role in the health of the nation's economy and environment. Manufacturing contributes more to the U.S. economy than any other sector and employs 14 million workers – but also uses nearly one-third of all energy consumed in our country. Boosting industrial energy efficiency is a means to significantly reduce future carbon emissions in the United States.

“For years we have been saying that actions speak,” said Dave Kitts, Mannington’s Vice President –Environment. “At Mannington, we are expanding our standing efforts to reduce energy used compared to product manufactured, to include this partnership with the Department of Energy. Energy is a critical resource for making our products; manufacturers must be willing to make smart leadership choices that will benefit our shared planet, and our shared future.”

Congrats to Mannington Mills on their achievement from your friends at FlooringMarket!
